Poet Joanna McClure requested a film with the collages of Max Ernst and Lawrence Jordan decided to make a tribute to the two men who most influenced his film-work at the beginning: Max Ernst (collage) and Luis Buñuel (surrealism in cinema). A few years earlier, from late-2011 until October 2013, Jordan had written a book of about one-hundred pages in the surrealist tradition of "automatic writing" entitled the CLOUD JOURNAL. He thought that he could marry some of the text of the journal with the collages of Ernst's UNE SEMAINE DE BONTÉ along with bits of his own animation. Jordan shot the film on day-one of the Ernst collage novel (with the lion) and used the first sixteen pages of his journal as the text, enlisting his friend and collaborator, Leroy Clark, to narrate and engineer the sound. They finished the film digitally and then return to the original format, 16mm film. Jordan has nothing esoteric to say about the film except to explain that the title is a tribute to Buñuel. As there is no dog in UN CHIEN ANDALOU, there is no walrus in THE APOPLECTIC WALRUS.
